Road Trippin'

The year was 2009: Obama was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States, Captain Sully safely crashed-landed into the Hudson, Slumdog Millionaire won Best Picture at the Oscars, Swine Flu was like everywhere, and Andrew Stamper, the kid who had once barely graduated high school with a 1.8 GPA (I'm totally serious), had somehow gotten himself in Carnegie Mellon University.

Long journeys have never really been much of an issue for me - ask me about the time I once spent over 18 hours straight manning the Helm of the USS Mitscher. So driving from Atlanta to Pittsburgh in a giant Uhaul truck with my dog and girlfriend in tow seemed like a piece of cake. However, what was supposed to be about a 10-12 hour trip, became an 18-hour journey from hell.

And since 2009 was a whole 13 years ago, here's My Top 13 favorite Road Trip Films made in my lifetime.

  • 13. True Romance
  • 12. Tommy Boy
  • 11. Zombieland
  • 10. The Muppet Movie
  • 9. Almost Famous
  • 8. Thelma & Louise
  • 7. National Lampoon's Vacation
  • 6. Pee-wee's Big Adventure
  • 5. Dumb & Dumber
  • 4. Rain Man
  • 3. Little Miss Sunshine
  • O Brother, Where Art Thou?
  • 1. Planes, Trains & Automobiles

*honorable mentions - The Wizard, Little Monsters, Road Trip, Euro Trip, Midnight Run, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and The Blues Brothers. What about Sideways, does Sideways count as a road trip movie? I'm not sure. It'd probably sandwich itself between Thelma and Almost on my list.
